Farms By Type

Farms in the Peak District differ in exactly what type of farming they do, there are two main types of farming in the Peak District, cattle and sheep farming, whilst arable farming also takes place on a smaller scale. This type of Peak District farm are actively encouraged and financially aided to diversify their activities and many branch out into tourism and recreation as well as conservation and a wider scope of farming methods. Many peak district farms offer everything from accomodation to workshops and studios for arts and crafts, through to outdoor activities, conservation walks and farm shops and village stores.

The life of a farmer regardless of what type of farm they work on can be a very isolated and lonely existence. Years ago many farm workers would have been employed to help with labour intensive chores on Peak District farms but changes in farming methods, the introduction of labour saving machinery and of course the cost and administration of actually employing someone means that most Peak District farms of any type are run single-handedly or with the help of family members.
Nobody wants the structure of farming in the Peak District to change, but the country scene of black and white Friesian cattle grazing in Peak District fields could well be a thing of the past if something is not done to help the dairy farmers to survive.
