Farms By Area
This section of the website lists all of the Peak District farms in our directory sorted by area. In the last 50 years farming methods in the Peak District have changed considerably mostly due to economic and regulatory conditions. The last 10 years has seen farms in the area rise to the challenges of BSE, Foot and Mouth and rapidly declining milk prices. Smaller "hobby farms" in the Peak District area are becoming more frequent with people buying up farmhouses to only use the land, leaving ot to fallow or renting it for summer grazing.
In 1984 milk quotas were established as an excess was actually being produced; there was too much supply coming from farms in the Peak District area. As a result of this Peak District area farmers were not able to increase their herds so many dairy famers sold their quotas and gave up milking, whilst others bought up quotas and established huge herds. It is estimated that 7% of dairy farms go out of business every year, between 1996 and 2007 the number of dairy farms in the Peak District area dropped from 842 to 460.
